Governance

The Williamsburg Charter High School is governed by an independent Board of Trustees who has ultimate responsibility for the success of the school. As independent individuals they are chosen to uphold the public trust of managing and leading the school and handling its assets. The Board of Trustees is responsible for a critical source of leadership that is not obviously seen on a day to day basis.

The Board of Trustees is responsible for the fiduciary needs of the school. This comprises ensuring that the school is faithful to its mission, accountable for performance, and compliant with the relevant laws and regulations. The Board also provides stewardship of the school's tangible assets, including investments and guaranteeing that WCHS is financially sound. This responsibility includes ensuring that an annual independent audit is conducted to assess the school management and fiscal controls and make sure it is compliant with all not-for-profit regulatory requirements.

The Board of Trustees is also responsible for working in a strategic partnership with the management of the school to ensure that its goals are carried out in the manner outlined in the charter and as developed on a yearly basis by the leadership of the school.  The Board sets the organization's priorities, deploys resources, and monitors goals on a regular basis.  Management is held accountable for the success of the school and the C.E.O. is offered evaluations and support.  The Board of Trustees also serves as a buffer and bridge between the organization and its environment, advocating for the organization and building support within the wider community.

The WCHS Board of Trustees is led by an Executive Committee consisting of the Chairperson, Treasurer, and Secretary. Additional committees include Finance, Audit, By-Laws, and Academic Oversight. The board meets 10 times a year and complies with all open public meeting laws. The current board is comprised of experts in finance and financial management, investments and asset management, real estate, law, education, youth, the special needs of students, business, and strategic management.  The board also includes a student voting trustee and non-voting staff and parent trustees.
